Complacency can be a major problem when it comes to a lot of things in life but especially fitness. It’s important to remember that there is always room for improvement. Regardless of what stage of the journey you’re on (and what successes/failures you’ve had), there’s always another milestone. There are five major times during my journey where I’ve felt complacency start to set in. Over the next five articles I’ll attempt to explain each type of complacency I’ve felt and how to counteract it.
The first form of complacency I, personally felt was before I even started. The moment I finally resolved to start my journey, it felt great. So much so, in fact, that it almost never started. Oddly enough, once I had researched and planned out my journey I felt done. It felt like I had completed my goal and there was nothing else to achieve.
This “before the start” complacency almost made me stop right there. Before even setting foot in the gym or changing my diet. It was nearly a week after I made my plan that I actually started to implement it.
My thinking is that this form of complacency occurs because, often times, the hardest part to a fitness related journey is actually starting it. So, once a plan of attack is made, we feel like finished the hard part and are therefore, done.
Regardless of why it happens, however, it’s usually the thing that halts most fitness regimens. That being said, once beaten, there’s a good chance the journey will succeed.
For me, personally, the “before the start” complacency was strong and I had to work hard to get over it. I found that immersing myself in the world of fitness was helpful. I subscribed to a lot of fitness channels on youtube, only watched fitness videos, and followed fitness related channels on other social media.
What this did was bring fitness to the forefront of my mind at all times. Anytime I hopped on youtube, my feed was full of fitness videos. Anytime I checked my social media, motivational fitness quotes were being thrown at me.
This constant exposure to content related to fitness is what finally allowed me to subconsciously get over my complacency and actually start my journey.
